I like to keep my fridge looking as minimal as possible. I don’t keep magnets, calendars, or artwork on it. I just love the way it looks in its natural state!
But it’s so hard keeping it clean.
Every time I walk into my kitchen, I see tiny fingerprints everywhere. #momlife
I purchased Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes to help me stay on top of it, but the thing is, I didn’t love the icky residue it left behind.
That was even more annoying to deal with than my kids’ fingerprints.
Why Make a DIY Stainless Steel Cleaner?
I dreaded reaching for those wipes because I always have to follow up with a paper towel every time I use them. That’s the only way I get those “streak-free” results which makes no sense to me.
I should just be able to use the Weiman wipes and walk away, but I can’t.
So I did some research and made my OWN stainless steel cleaner. This recipe is all-natural, disinfecting, and STREAK-FREE!

DIY Stainless Steel Cleaner Ingredients
This is what you’re gonna need to make a streak-free stainless steel cleaner at home:
- 1 ½ cup distilled water
- ¼ cup white distilled vinegar
- ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 10-12 drops lavender essential oil
The secret ingredient is cornstarch!
That’s what makes this DIY stainless steel recipe streak-free. And the lavender essential oil + 70% isopropyl alcohol works together to fight against bacteria.
Because it’s not enough JUST to tackle those tiny fingerprints. It’s important to kill those germs too!
How to Make A DIY Stainless Steel Cleaner
You will need a 16 oz glass spray bottle and a funnel. Once you have your materials and ingredients ready, follow these instructions below to make a DIY Stainless Steel Cleaner!

First, dissolve the cornstarch in a small amount of cold water and pour it into a glass spray bottle using a funnel. Then, pour your distilled water into the spray bottle. Add the vinegar and rubbing alcohol next, and add your drops of lavender essential oil. Shake to combine ingredients.
Use this cleaner on all of your stainless steel appliances and never buy those wipes again!
Just shake before each use, spray and wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a paper towel.
The results are amazing and last a good while. I hope you enjoy this Weiman alternative stainless steel cleaner as much as I do!

Can you use a plastic spray bottle
Danielle Skeaton says
Yes, but if you do, I’d skip add any essential oil.

Not sure what I did wrong but it left streaks on my fridge? Seems to clean but then I have streaks. Any idea? Thanks!
Danielle Skeaton says
Hi Lisa! That will sometimes happen to me too. What I do is clean the fridge first with a mild cleaner or even Dawn Powerwash to remove any dirt or grime, and then follow up with this DIY stainless steel cleaner. I hope that helps!

Must it be a glass bottle? Could a plastic sprayer bottle be used?
Danielle Skeaton says
A glass spray bottle is always preferred when a DIY cleaner uses essential oils, but if you don’t want to use any essential oil (for this recipe I only used it to add some fragrance), then a plastic spray bottle will work just fine!
