Fall Family Fun: Things to Do This October

When you live in the Midwest, Fall becomes your favorite season.

October is my favorite month! It’s the only time you can enjoy the outdoors without sweating like a pig or driving around with the windows up.

My problem was only focusing on Halloween — I didn’t realize there’s so much to do all the other weekends in October.

Fall Family Fun

Today, I’m sharing our favorite things to do in October, divided into four weekends.

Bucket lists like this for summer are great, but I think they can get overwhelming when you don’t know what to do. At least organizing it this way, you can decide and/or schedule your family fun activities ahead!

Just remember to keep it simple. You don’t need to book an entire day of fun. Pick 1-2 activities each weekend and I recommend having a backup in mind too.

First Weekend of October

Autumn is officially here, the leaves are beginning to change more and more, and the demand for pumpkin spice lattes are through the roof!

Here are some family fun ideas for this weekend:

  • Go for a Fall hike
  • Go apple picking
  • Attend a high school football game
  • Visit the zoo
  • Make candy apples
  • Go to a drive-in movie theater
  • Have a fall picnic at a park

Second Weekend of October

By now, everyone is in the Fall spirit! Front porches are decorated, Fall candles are burning, and summer wardrobes are stored away.

Here are some family fun ideas for this weekend:

  • Go pumpkin picking
  • Go on a hayride
  • Visit a corn maze
  • Make apple cider
  • Bake pumpkin bread
  • Host a bonfire with marshmallows

Third Weekend of October

The air is crisp and the leaves are falling! Get out and enjoy this weather because it doesn’t last long.

Here are some family fun ideas for this weekend:

  • Visit a Fall festival
  • Decorate your house for Halloween
  • Play in the leaves
  • Carve pumpkins
  • Go shopping for Halloween costumes
  • Go for a scenic drive to see the changing leaves
  • Camp in your backyard
